Nidec Machine Tool America (NMTA) offers the RoboCam inspection solution. RoboCam is NMTA’s robotic camera solution for automated gear cutting tool inspection. Powered by artificial intelligence, the system evaluates cutting tool condition. RoboCam helps manufacturers improve efficiency while optimizing tooling performance and maintenance operations.

RoboCam automates this process by using a robotic system to position a camera for inspection of the cutting tool. Artificial intelligence is then used to evaluate the captured imagery and assess tool condition.The AI-based evaluation provides an additional layer of analysis, allowing the system to identify and assess changes in tool condition from the acquired images. This approach is intended to provide manufacturers with more consistent information about tooling condition and its progression over time.

For gear manufacturers, the ability to monitor tool condition can be particularly relevant to process control. Cutting tools that remain in service beyond their useful condition can affect machining performance, while replacing tools unnecessarily can increase tooling costs and interrupt production.

An automated inspection system therefore has the potential to support a more condition-based approach to tool maintenance.

RoboCam is positioned not simply as an imaging system, but as a tool-condition monitoring solution. By applying AI to the inspection process, the system is intended to help manufacturers use visual information to make decisions about tooling.

This could include determining whether a tool remains suitable for production, identifying tools requiring attention, and supporting maintenance planning. The objective is to move tool inspection from a periodic manual task toward a more repeatable and data-driven process.

At IMTS, the company will exhibit its RoboCam inspection solution alongside the ZFA260 gear grinder and MSS300 Super Skiving machine.

The ZFA260 grinder handles gears with external diameters up to 260 mm. Its twin-table structure includes a high-speed rotary column that minimizes non-machining time, while simultaneous full-form flank bias adjustment helps optimize tooth geometry. The machine is well suited for manufacturers producing high-volume automotive and robotic components where consistency and throughput are critical.

The MSS300 Super Skiving machine machines both internal and external gears. The company says its robust design enhances thermal and mechanical stability throughout the cutting process. Massive guideways on the three linear axes provide superior rigidity, and a twin-ball-screw drive on the Z-axis delivers consistent power and increased control. Nidec says its patented Super Skiving tools reduce chip loading, enabling high-efficiency machining with Nidec-optimized skiving strategies.

The MSS300 accommodates workpieces up to 300 mm in diameter, with a maximum gear width of 100 mm and a maximum spindle speed of 5,000 rpm.
