Sharpening diamond-tipped and solid carbide rotary tools will be the focal point of Vollmer's display at Stand 1017 at the GrindTec 2014 international grinding technology trade fair, to be held March 19 to 22 in Augsburg, Germany. The grinding and erosion machine company will demo its new VGrind 160 grinding center, the company's first for processing carbide rotary tools.

Other trade fair highlights for Vollmer include the VGrind 160 tool grinding machine and the QXD 250 erosion machine with new ExLevel Pro software. With its ability to generate single erosion pulses at a time, the VPulse EDM technology used on the QXD 250 allows surface quality to be increased by a factor of two or more, according to Vollmer. The extended travel distance and swivelling range of the QXD 250 means that tools with a diameter of 320mm and a length of 250mm can be accommodated.

Additionally, Loroch, a Vollmer Group company, will also present its product portfolio at stand 1034. At stand 1034 in hall 1, Loroch will present its portfolio of automatic saw blade sharpening machines, including the new CNBS 100 automatic band saw blade sharpening machine. This is an upgrade of the CNBS 80. Also displayed will be the PowerStar 850 CNC sharpening machine, which bridges the gap between the entry-level EKOSTAR 760 and the K850, a fully automatic saw blade sharpening machine solution, according to the company.

Both Vollmer and Loroch's U.S. headquarters are located in Carnegie, Pa.

"When manufacturing rotary tools, whether these are diamond-tipped or solid carbide, the sharpening process plays the lead role. The reason is that it determines the tool's level of precision as well as its service life," said Dr. Stefan Brand, Managing Director of the Vollmer Group.

Vollmer will present seven of its current sharpening machines for tool machining at the show, as well as a range of services, including consultation, advice and training, financing, maintenance and repair.

Several machines for machining circular saws will also be available at the Vollmer stand for visitors to examine. The CL 200 sharpening machine for the machining of carbide-tipped circular saws and the CNC-controlled CP 200 for sharpening hook and clearance surfaces will appear alongside the variant CPF200 for sharpening the sides. Additionally, the CHD 270 with eight CNC-controlled axes for fully automated machining of circular saw blades will be displayed.

Related Glossary Terms

  • bandsaw blade ( band)

    bandsaw blade ( band)

Endless band, normally with serrated teeth, that serves as the cutting tool for cutoff or contour band machines.

  • circular saw

    circular saw

Cutoff machine utilizing a circular blade with serrated teeth. See saw, sawing machine.

  • clearance

    clearance

Space provided behind a tool’s land or relief to prevent rubbing and subsequent premature deterioration of the tool. See land; relief.

  • computer numerical control ( CNC)

    computer numerical control ( CNC)

Microprocessor-based controller dedicated to a machine tool that permits the creation or modification of parts. Programmed numerical control activates the machine’s servos and spindle drives and controls the various machining operations. See DNC, direct numerical control; NC, numerical control.

  • electrical-discharge machining ( EDM)

    electrical-discharge machining ( EDM)

Process that vaporizes conductive materials by controlled application of pulsed electrical current that flows between a workpiece and electrode (tool) in a dielectric fluid. Permits machining shapes to tight accuracies without the internal stresses conventional machining often generates. Useful in diemaking.

  • grinding

    grinding

Machining operation in which material is removed from the workpiece by a powered abrasive wheel, stone, belt, paste, sheet, compound, slurry, etc. Takes various forms: surface grinding (creates flat and/or squared surfaces); cylindrical grinding (for external cylindrical and tapered shapes, fillets, undercuts, etc.); centerless grinding; chamfering; thread and form grinding; tool and cutter grinding; offhand grinding; lapping and polishing (grinding with extremely fine grits to create ultrasmooth surfaces); honing; and disc grinding.

  • grinding machine

    grinding machine

Powers a grinding wheel or other abrasive tool for the purpose of removing metal and finishing workpieces to close tolerances. Provides smooth, square, parallel and accurate workpiece surfaces. When ultrasmooth surfaces and finishes on the order of microns are required, lapping and honing machines (precision grinders that run abrasives with extremely fine, uniform grits) are used. In its “finishing” role, the grinder is perhaps the most widely used machine tool. Various styles are available: bench and pedestal grinders for sharpening lathe bits and drills; surface grinders for producing square, parallel, smooth and accurate parts; cylindrical and centerless grinders; center-hole grinders; form grinders; facemill and endmill grinders; gear-cutting grinders; jig grinders; abrasive belt (backstand, swing-frame, belt-roll) grinders; tool and cutter grinders for sharpening and resharpening cutting tools; carbide grinders; hand-held die grinders; and abrasive cutoff saws.

  • sawing machine ( saw)

    sawing machine ( saw)

Machine designed to use a serrated-tooth blade to cut metal or other material. Comes in a wide variety of styles but takes one of four basic forms: hacksaw (a simple, rugged machine that uses a reciprocating motion to part metal or other material); cold or circular saw (powers a circular blade that cuts structural materials); bandsaw (runs an endless band; the two basic types are cutoff and contour band machines, which cut intricate contours and shapes); and abrasive cutoff saw (similar in appearance to the cold saw, but uses an abrasive disc that rotates at high speeds rather than a blade with serrated teeth).
