Ballnose Inserts

July 12, 2012

Dapra Corp. has introduced precision-ground Ball Nose inserts with PCD tips. These diamond-tipped inserts reportedly afford unsurpassed tool life for milling soft, non-ferrous materials such as aluminum and graphite. Their expected life is approximately 50 to 100 times that of normal carbide-coated inserts, providing outstanding wear resistance.

PCD-tipped ball nose inserts are precision-ground to provide a sharp, accurate cutting radius. Available with 3/8", ½" and ¾" diameters, these inserts are designed foruse with Dapra's standard steel, carbide-core and carbide-shank cutter bodies.

Related Glossary Terms

  • gang cutting ( milling)

    gang cutting ( milling)

Machining with several cutters mounted on a single arbor, generally for simultaneous cutting.

  • milling

    milling

Machining operation in which metal or other material is removed by applying power to a rotating cutter. In vertical milling, the cutting tool is mounted vertically on the spindle. In horizontal milling, the cutting tool is mounted horizontally, either directly on the spindle or on an arbor. Horizontal milling is further broken down into conventional milling, where the cutter rotates opposite the direction of feed, or “up” into the workpiece; and climb milling, where the cutter rotates in the direction of feed, or “down” into the workpiece. Milling operations include plane or surface milling, endmilling, facemilling, angle milling, form milling and profiling.

  • polycrystalline diamond ( PCD)

    polycrystalline diamond ( PCD)

Cutting tool material consisting of natural or synthetic diamond crystals bonded together under high pressure at elevated temperatures. PCD is available as a tip brazed to a carbide insert carrier. Used for machining nonferrous alloys and nonmetallic materials at high cutting speeds.

  • wear resistance

    wear resistance

Ability of the tool to withstand stresses that cause it to wear during cutting; an attribute linked to alloy composition, base material, thermal conditions, type of tooling and operation and other variables.
