Deep-Hole Drills

December 01, 2014

Achieving the best results in deep-hole drilling calls for capable and reliable tools. To this end, tool manufacturer InovaTools is offering new double-cut deep-hole drills with internal cooling, designed precisely for the particular challenges of this special application in terms of substrate, geometry and chip clearance. Consequently, they far surpass conventional gun drills.

Certain processes and factors are especially important for guaranteeing high quality in deep-hole drilling. In particular, the right substrate is needed in order to provide the long tool with the necessary ground stability and breaking strength during drilling into solid material.

Ditmar Ertel, Managing Director of InovaTools: "A special geometry that guarantees low chip formation and optimal chip removal is also extremely important in deep-hole drilling. All of this is offered by our new pilot and deep-hole drills."

Tools made by InovaTools are made of carefully selected, extremely tough carbide metal. In addition to its breakage resistance, this promises excellent tool life. A special taper ratio and the four lands that support and stabilize the drill in the axial direction ensure precise and vibration-free drilling with extremely low deviation from center even at great depths.

The front geometry with a 140 degree point angle is necessary for optimal centering of the drill and short chip-breaking. Large chip grooves transport the small chips quickly and safely up from the depths. The special design features reduce the feed force and, in combination with a high-performance coating, tool wear.

Due to high cutting speeds and the length of the drill, both a high-performance ultra-fine filtration system and suitable deep-drilling oil, as well as drill-guiding by means of a pilot hole, are required for the InovaTools deep-hole drill to be used successfully (pilot drill = 0.02mm in diameter larger than the respective deep-hole drill).

The InovaTools deep-hole drill is available in diameters of 1mm to 20mm and in lengths of 8 x D to 30 x D. Special-purpose drills of up to 50 x D can also be made to order.

Ditmar Ertel: "Deep holes drilled by our special tools made from such materials as steel, cast iron and nonferrous metals are set apart by high process reliability with high chip removal volumes, excellent dimensional accuracy and outstanding hole surface quality."

  • centering

    centering

    1. Process of locating the center of a workpiece to be mounted on centers. 2. Process of mounting the workpiece concentric to the machine spindle. See centers.

  • chip clearance

    chip clearance

In milling, the groove or space provided in the cutter body that allows chips to be formed by the inserts.

  • clearance

    clearance

Space provided behind a tool’s land or relief to prevent rubbing and subsequent premature deterioration of the tool. See land; relief.

  • feed

    feed

Rate of change of position of the tool as a whole, relative to the workpiece while cutting.

  • point angle

    point angle

Included angle at the point of a twist drill or similar tool; for general-purpose tools, the point angle is typically 118°.
