Easy Preset Collet Holders

July 01, 2015

NT Tool's Easy Preset Collet Holders are designed to increase setup speeds and minimize downtime on the shop floor. These SDM holders have a built-in guide ring that can be rotated by hand to adjust projection length in seconds, without sacrificing the holder's high level of precision. Projection length can be adjusted easily even while measuring height, allowing the target value to be reached with ease.

Like many of NT Tool's collet holders, the SDM utilizes 12° taper FDC collets. By using a more gradual taper than 16° ER collets, FDC collets grip the cutting tool more evenly, increasing gripping force and reducing slippage. This also allows FDC collets to provide runout below 5 µm, whereas ER collets can only guarantee 10 µm. Metal-sealed coolant-compatible FDC collets have the added benefit of working without sealing rings, further decreasing downtime for routine setup and maintenance.

SDM holders are available in HSK, CAT (standard and two-face contact), BT (standard and two-face contact), and UTS shank styles. Standard collets cover a wide chucking range (0.020" to 0.866" in diameter/0.5mm to 22.0mm), and custom sizes are readily accommodated.

The Easy Preset system is also available for NT Tool's STM Tapping Chucks.

Related Glossary Terms

  • collet

    collet

Flexible-sided device that secures a tool or workpiece. Similar in function to a chuck, but can accommodate only a narrow size range. Typically provides greater gripping force and precision than a chuck. See chuck.

  • shank

    shank

Main body of a tool; the portion of a drill or similar end-held tool that fits into a collet, chuck or similar mounting device.

  • tapping

    tapping

Machining operation in which a tap, with teeth on its periphery, cuts internal threads in a predrilled hole having a smaller diameter than the tap diameter. Threads are formed by a combined rotary and axial-relative motion between tap and workpiece. See tap.
