The GAE series of CNC Angular Cylindrical Grinders from Shigiya (USA) Ltd. reportedly provides high accuracy at an affordable price. Featuring rigid wheelheads, workheads and tailstock units, the GAE series is engineered for precision during heavy grinding. When combined with an angle head type wheelhead, the GAE performs face grinding with ease, similar to that of a plain type cylindrical grinder.
For precision, efficiency and productivity, the GAE wheelhead features a rigid main body, a heat-treated nitride steel wheel spindle and a large 510mm-dia. wheel. To maximize stability and load capacity, the GAE's wheelhead and table feed include wide, V-flat guiding surfaces. The high damping performance and equalization of lubricant provided by the oil film's squeezing effect ensure long-term smooth and precise grinding. Non-concentric hydrodynamic bearings secure an optimal wedge angle. Bearings are ground to a high degree of precision with Shigiya's exclusively developed grinder for bearings.
The GAE is equipped with a non-swivel dead spindle workhead for further stability and low vibration. In addition, a highly rigid tailstock and a large diameter spindle enable high-precision, heavy grinding. Shigiya's newly designed 250mm center-distance model for short length workpieces features a compact workhead and tailstock that allows for an approximately 20 percent reduction in machine width compared to previous models.
The GAE includes an interactive automatic programming system designed for easy operation. This system enables a wide range of grinding and dressing patterns. Due to its high output servo motor, the grinder can change workpiece rotational speed steplessly within the range of 15 to 600 rpm in response to NC instructions.
Shigiya offers a variety of options for the GAE, including an in-process O.D. gauge, a workpiece shoulder locator, an automatic loading/unloading system and more. GAE-30B and GAE-40B types are available in the series. The GAE-30B features a ø 300mm swing over table and 250 to 2,000mm distance between centers. The GAE-40B features a 410mm swing over table and 220 to 1,970mm distance between centers. Wheel size for both models is 510 (O.D.) x 50 (W) x 127 (I.D.)mm.
Related Glossary Terms
- centers
centers
Cone-shaped pins that support a workpiece by one or two ends during machining. The centers fit into holes drilled in the workpiece ends. Centers that turn with the workpiece are called “live” centers; those that do not are called “dead” centers.
- computer numerical control ( CNC)
computer numerical control ( CNC)
Microprocessor-based controller dedicated to a machine tool that permits the creation or modification of parts. Programmed numerical control activates the machine’s servos and spindle drives and controls the various machining operations. See DNC, direct numerical control; NC, numerical control.
- dressing
dressing
Removal of undesirable materials from “loaded” grinding wheels using a single- or multi-point diamond or other tool. The process also exposes unused, sharp abrasive points. See loading; truing.
- feed
feed
Rate of change of position of the tool as a whole, relative to the workpiece while cutting.
- grinding
grinding
Machining operation in which material is removed from the workpiece by a powered abrasive wheel, stone, belt, paste, sheet, compound, slurry, etc. Takes various forms: surface grinding (creates flat and/or squared surfaces); cylindrical grinding (for external cylindrical and tapered shapes, fillets, undercuts, etc.); centerless grinding; chamfering; thread and form grinding; tool and cutter grinding; offhand grinding; lapping and polishing (grinding with extremely fine grits to create ultrasmooth surfaces); honing; and disc grinding.
- numerical control ( NC)
numerical control ( NC)
Any controlled equipment that allows an operator to program its movement by entering a series of coded numbers and symbols. See CNC, computer numerical control; DNC, direct numerical control.
