MU-8000V-L Vertical Machining Center

Okuma’s MU-8000V-L vertical machining center is suitable for 5-axis multiple-sided machining. This VMC features standard ballscrew cooling and a rigid left-right, mobile trunnion table that supports high precision and high cutting power. The low center of gravity in workpiece movement gives this machine the ability to machine difficult materials and a wide range of workpieces.

This workhorse is available with a standard  40 or 50 spindle, providing a configuration for nearly any 5-axis job. An in-machine coil chip conveyor allows for safe, reliable chip discharge. Close proximity of the spindle and control panel in addition to easy access to the workpiece give this machine superior ease-of-use for the operator.

Maximum productivity is achieved with a wide array of automation options. The unique design places the pallet changes at the back of the machine, allowing easy connection to a PALLETACE flexible manufacturing system, pallet pool, large capacity ATC and robots to deliver high productivity in addition to high accuracy.

The MU-8000V-L can be equipped with Okuma’s exclusive Super-NURBS function, enabling high feed rates and smooth finishes. Optional Machining Navi monitors cutting conditions and displays optimal spindle speed to eliminate chatter. Five-axis auto tuning achieves higher accuracies by automatically measuring and correcting machine misalignments in minutes.

Okuma’s Thermo-Friendly Concept and collision avoidance system are standard. Intelligent technologies ensure this 5-axis machining center performs consistently from the first part to the last, regardless of warm up time or ambient temperatures and the machine is protected from potentially harmful crashes, according to the company.

Related Glossary Terms

  • chatter

    chatter

Condition of vibration involving the machine, workpiece and cutting tool. Once this condition arises, it is often self-sustaining until the problem is corrected. Chatter can be identified when lines or grooves appear at regular intervals in the workpiece. These lines or grooves are caused by the teeth of the cutter as they vibrate in and out of the workpiece and their spacing depends on the frequency of vibration.

  • feed

    feed

Rate of change of position of the tool as a whole, relative to the workpiece while cutting.

  • flexible manufacturing system ( FMS)

    flexible manufacturing system ( FMS)

Automated manufacturing system designed to machine a variety of similar parts. System is designed to minimize production changeover time. Computers link machine tools with the workhandling system and peripherals. Also associated with machine tools grouped in cells for efficient production. See cell manufacturing.

  • machining center

    machining center

CNC machine tool capable of drilling, reaming, tapping, milling and boring. Normally comes with an automatic toolchanger. See automatic toolchanger.

  • rapid traverse

    rapid traverse

Movement on a CNC mill or lathe that is from point to point at full speed but, usually, without linear interpolation.
