Not all landing gear tests require facilities the size of small towns or the ability to land the 787 Dreamliner, which is discussed in the March 2009 cover story of Cutting Tool Engineering magazine. Presented here is avideo of a SideLok long-edge milling cutter from Valenite LLC, Madison Heights, Mich.,machining Ti6Al4V at a cutting speed of 150 sfm, a feed rate of 4.5 ipm, a WOCof 0.375" and a DOC of 1.5" on a 30-hp HaasV65 CNC mill. The key technology of the SideLok systemis the co-location of the fastening system in the normally unused chip gullet space.

Stef Wertheimer is the founder of Iscar Metalworking, which began operations in 1952 as a one-man tool shop in northern Israel. Today, Iscar is a multinational business, 80 percent of which was purchased in 2006 by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Co. In a wide-ranging interview with Cutting Tool Engineering Editorial Director Alan Rooks, Wertheimer recounts the history of Iscar and his project of developing industrial parks throughout the Near East.

The practice of turning threads on a lathe is well known but oftennot well-understood. Toolmakers offer their recommendations on how todo it the right way. By Bill Kennedy There are nearly as many ways to produce threads as there are types of parts that require them. Threads can be cut with a die, rolled, ground, tapped or milled, using lathes, machining centers or specialized machines. In the video, Frank Battaglia, staff engineer for Kennametal Inc., Latrobe, Pa., provides a couple of pointers regarding the use of shims with laydown threading inserts to achieve optimal results.

Data Flute CNC's Cliff Flynn, director of research and new product development, gets rough with the company's AFDH finishing tool in this 5-minute report. Flynn noted that the demonstration provided at IMTS 2008 was purposely aggressive on the finishing tool to underscore its finishing ability.

Cutting Tool Engineering Editor Alan Richter sat down with Carlos Cardoso, the chairman, president and CEO of Kennametal Inc., at the recent IMTS 2008 show in Chicago. The 7-minute report addresses Kennametal's goals for diversification and expansion globally, and how that has impacted the company's worldwide sales. Cardoso also notes tht Kennametal will continue co-development tools with others because that's what's best for customers.

Cutting Tool Engineering Editor Alan Richter's September cover story, titled "Smart Weighting," takes a close look at the practice of "lightweighting." In short, automakers are switching from mild steel and iron to components made of lower weight materials. The article focuses on incorporating parts machined from aluminum and advanced high-strength steels, specifically microalloy steels, including those cut from solid workpieces and near-net shapes.

As the Northeast U.S. representative for SARIX microEDM equipment, Leer Technologies Inc., Claverack, N.Y., spent the better part of EASTEC 2008 showing off the newest features of the SARIX-200 3D MicroEDM Milling machine.
