Scappoose, Oregon – The Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center Research and Development (OMIC R&D) welcomed Sugino Machine Limited in January 2019 as its 23rd member. With its global headquarters in Uozu, Toyama Prefecture Japan, and U.S. headquarters in Itasca, Illinois, Sugino supports a wide array of industries with precision equipment for high-pressure cleaning, machining, and many other functions in diverse industries ranging from automobiles to aircrafts to construction and energy.

With over 80 years of experience and more than 1,550 employees worldwide, Sugino Machine Limited’s U.S. arm, Sugino Corporation, was established in 1980. Their products are industrial equipment and tools that may not be visible to ordinary consumers, but which play a key role in a wide range of industries, helping manufacturing customers solve their most demanding production challenges.

Craig Campbell, Executive Director of OMIC R&D said, “Sugino is a great addition to the OMIC R&D partnership and we are pleased to welcome them as our newest member. They have developed technologies using high pressure water jets that demonstrates clear innovation in metals manufacturing. We are especially excited about the equipment they are providing to the facility in Scappoose. The CNC Jet Clean Center Model 603 Robo Ultra-High-Pressure Water Washing/Deburring System provides a safe and effective solution to the high level of repetition-induced job injuries associated with deburring.”

OMIC R&D is the fifteenth innovation research collaborative established with Boeing leadership worldwide, and the first Boeing has sponsored in the United States. Its mission is to bring together manufacturing companies and higher education in an innovative environment to solve the advanced manufacturing challenges facing industry. Faculty and university students undertake “outside-in” applied research to solve real production problems while training the next generation of engineers and technologists to meet the high demand for skilled workers in advanced metals manufacturing. Member companies pool resources and knowledge with researchers to create a highly dynamic and innovative R&D center with access to the most advanced equipment and tools.

Don Reeder, General Manager for Marketing and Strategy at Sugino said, “A partnership with OMIC R&D is very important to Sugino for a couple of reasons. We see tremendous opportunity in the Aircraft/Aerospace industry and OMIC R&D provides us with an avenue to more intelligently reach this customer base. Likewise, having our equipment in a hands-on, collaborative setting like OMIC R&D, where innovators can bring their challenges, has incalculable value from a time and resources perspective. We’re eager to work with the other member companies as an engaged partner in this exciting collaboration.”
