The trend toward miniaturization is unstoppable. Automotive parts, semiconductors, electrical components and medtech devices: in almost every industry, products now have to combine increasingly compact dimensions with higher performance. And that poses major challenges for manufacturers and suppliers, who have to achieve maximum accuracy when processing these high-precision lightweight parts.

NUM has now added non-circular grinding functionality to its NUMgrind cylindrical grinding software, which forms an application-specific element of the company's renowned Flexium+ CNC platform. It is fully compatible with other Flexium software, from release 4.1.20.00 onwards.n

New features include the addition of plunge-milling cycles to the 3D and 5-axis strategies for machining cutting edges. Material is removed by plunging movements to reduce vibration and improve surface finish, especially helpful for machining edges with steep walls. When 5-axis machining, undercut areas can also be reached by specifying the lateral inclination on the tilted tool. By specifying a distance, circular or linear movement profile, the tool is optimally retracted from the part.

With the special flute geometry, the chips (swarf) are evacuated effectively. This means that hole depths of up to 12 x Dc can be easily achieved. Oil or emulsion can both be used as a coolant with these drills. For deeper holes beyond 8 x Dc, Walter has also introduced a corresponding line of pilot micro drills, the DB131.

The new version of the solid carbide plunge mill is based on the same technology as the short version, transferred directly to the new one.
