Keep the burn at bay
A shop creep-feed grinding hardened steel using a water-based coolant kept running into trouble after grinding for a few hours. Everything would be grinding along fine, but then—WHAM—really bad burn would bring the job to a halt. And the burn wouldn't go away until the shop dressed the wheel again. Dr. Jeffrey Badger, the host of Cutting Tool Engineering's Grinding Doc Video Series, provides some insight and a solution in the 65th episode of the video series.

Fullerton Tool Co. completes expansion
When the Fullerton Tool Co., Saginaw, Mich., says it is "a growing industry leader in quality solid carbide cutting tools," the claim isn't just poetic prose from a public relations agency. LinX – The Evolution of the Linear Motor
Looking for a way to reduce grinding cycle times and improve cutting tool quality in order to satisfy customer requirements, Myles most recently invested in an ANCA MX7 Linear CNC tool grinder with linear motors. The LinX Linear Motor consists of a shaft containing magnets and a forcer containing wound copper coils. The symmetric design results in zero attractive forces between the forcer and shaft, greatly reducing the loading requirement on support bearings.

Virtual measuring machine offers ‘substantial’ time savings
Another recent Zoller innovation is »caz« software – Computer-Aided Zoller, the virtual measuring machine. "It's going to be a huge time-saver," Matt asserted. "Previously we would have to create the inspection program in front of the inspection machine. Since our Star Cutter tool grinding machines come with Numroto operating software, we can export the tool model from the Numroto machine programming software as an STL file, including a 3D image, and write the inspection program from that before the tool is even ground."
