No place like home — for making cutting tools
Customers of Cobra Carbide asked the company for made-in-America cutting tools and the West Coast manufacturer of drills, endmills, reamers and burs met their request. Until late 2016, Cobra sold tools in the U.S. that were produced either at its Riverside, Calif., facility or a plant it owned in India, which the company recently sold. It now produces all its tools in Riverside. "As more and more customers asked for made-in-the-U.S. product, we changed accordingly," said Cobra Carbide's CEO, Rakesh Aghi.

Viaud-Murat pointed out, though, that manufacturers should not claim a product is U.S.-made if it isn't. Doing so could result in legal action against the offending company, initiated by the Federal Trade Commission.

A long view on innovation
The view from Jungfraujoch inspires awe. So does the railway that transports visitors to the site—a ridge located 11,332' above sea level in the Swiss Alps. I was exposed to another example of commitment while in Switzerland, during a visit to the Mikron Group. Company vice president Markus Schnyder recounted his attempts in the early 1990s to develop a drill for a customer that used Mikron rotary transfer machines to drill holes in stainless steel watch bracelets.
