Guide to Cutting Speed, Feed Rate & Machining Efficiency

RPM Calculator (SFM + Diameter)

RPM: —

Formula: RPM = (SFM ÷ Diameter) × 3.82

Cutting speed formulas and reference

Cutting speed and feed rate work together to control chip load, tool life, and spindle demand. Use the formulas and machining references below to understand the calculator results.

Cutting Speed, Feed Rate, and RPM

Surface speed is commonly expressed as surface feet per minute (SFM). RPM converts that target speed into spindle speed for a specific diameter, so the same cutting speed will require higher RPM on a smaller tool and lower RPM on a larger tool.

RPM formula: RPM = (SFM / Diameter) x 3.82

How Diameter Changes the Result

The built-in calculator uses SFM and tool diameter in inches. Because diameter is in the denominator, small changes in cutter diameter can materially change spindle speed, which is why speed calculations should be tied to the actual cutting diameter rather than a nominal size when setup accuracy matters.

Feed Rate and Machining Efficiency

RPM alone does not define machining efficiency. Feed rate has to track spindle speed so the tool advances at the intended chip load. In milling, feed rate is commonly expressed as spindle speed multiplied by feed per tooth and flute count; in turning, feed is often managed per revolution. Using the correct RPM alongside the intended feed rate helps avoid rubbing, excessive heat, and avoidable cycle time loss.

Use the Calculator

Enter the target SFM and tool diameter above to calculate spindle speed. Use the result as a setup reference together with the feed values and machine limits already specified for the operation.
