During the 2017 #GraingerShow, Grainger announced the addition of a cutting tool reconditioning service to its metalworking solutions and its strategic relationship with US Tool to provide that service. The new offering helps manufacturing customers reduce the waste of discarding worn endmills and drills bits by repairing the tools' cutting edges back to original specifications for a fraction of the cost of buying new tools.

The use of carbide- or cermet-tipped thin-kerf metal circular saws allows for high feed rates, low machining forces and thin saw kerfs—all of which reduces energy consumption and saves resources, according to Vollmer of America, which specializes in grinding and erosion machines, and develops sharpening machines such as the CM 200/300 and the CMF 200/300.

Traditional manual indexable tool repair methods can place limitations on the feasibility of repairing more than moderate pocket damage. GKI says its process using 4- and 5-axis CNC machines removes the damage completely and replaces it with new metal, resulting in a superior-quality tool while enhancing GKI's ability to repair tooling that other repair houses would likely turn away as "beyond repair."

Every machine tool owner can reap benefits from a good spindle maintenance program. These include reductions in costly unplanned machine downtime, longer spindle life and improved part quality. But effective spindle maintenance requires perseverance and the appropriate technology—plus a little common sense.

Konecranes Machine Tool Service, Springfield, Ohio, offers retrofit packages that reportedly present customers with several approaches to maximize the performance of their equipment, the company announced in a Jan. 25 news release, noting that some of their customers have discovered a retrofitted machine tool can be a better option than new equipment—at about half the cost.
