Coefficient of Linear Thermal Expansion: Machining Guide
The coefficient of linear thermal expansion helps shops anticipate thermal growth in parts, tools, and holders so they can protect tolerance, fit, and process stability.
Reprogramming your reaction to priciest tools
When programmed to follow optimal CAM toolpaths and matched to a machine tool's capability, expensive cutting tools engineered for high efficiency may offer total-cost-and-performance results that are significantly better than lower-cost cutting tools.
Get With the Program: Right from wrong
Advanced CAM software provides the additional modeling that is needed to achieve total part quality, according to the Get With the Program column in the October 2017 issue of Cutting Tool Engineering magazine.
Look Ahead: Fast process for depositing ultrahard coatings
A new CS-50 deposition system from Duralar Technologies uses a process called DualArmor that is capable of applying DLC coatings of 50µm or thicker — and apply them at rates averaging 15µm to 20µm per hour. Conventional DLC coatings, which have a practical total thickness limit of around 5µm, are deposited one or two atoms at a time.
Demand rises for ultrahard-material cutting machines
A recent report, "Global Ultra Hard Material Cutting Machines Market" by Transparency Market Research, forecasts a healthy compound annual growth rate of 10.8 percent for these machines for the years 2016 to 2024, with the total market reaching $1.8 billion by the end of that period.
Get With The Program: Maximizing spindle time
CNC machine tools only generate revenue when they are producing good parts. The more good parts they make, the quicker the return on investment for machine tools. To maximize output, the total per-part machining time, including preparation, must be minimized.
Measuring machine productivity
Many large corporations are well versed in total productive maintenance, but smaller companies are probably not. To learn more about the concept, I attended a 1-day seminar about TPM at a local technical college.
Women to play an increasingly important role in manufacturing industry
Though Rosie the Riveter and a multitude of her sisters proved that women were perfectly capable of working in manufacturing when the men were called to serve during World War II, many of these patriotic women graciously stepped aside to allow the returning soldiers to resume their jobs.
A machine for dry grinding gears
Italy-based Samputensili S.p.A. unveiled a machine that eliminates the need for cutting oils when manufacturing gears, thereby reducing grinding costs. During grinding, oil-based lubricants cool the workpiece, as well as reduce friction and help evacuate chips. On the downside, however, oil use accounts for a significant amount of a grinding operation's total cost.
Total Tool Runout Measurement
Manufacturing high quality, high performance tools requires the Total Indicator Runout to be perfect or minimal for overall tool life and surface finish. Runout on blanks before grinding can be achieved by either spending a certain amount of time for work holding setup or alternatively, compensating the runout in software.
Toolholding system for large-diameter tools
The powRgrip (PG) 48 toolholding system from Rego-Fix USA is suited for large-diameter tools and aggressive machining. For cutters up to 40mm (1.500") in diameter, the company says the PG 48 holder ensures concentricity and total indicated runout (TIR) with deviations of less than 3 µm (0.0001") for tool lengths up to 3 x diameter and length pre-adjustment with a repeat accuracy of less than 10 µm (0.0004").
Camera-based inspection system
The Gi-100DT inspection system from General Inspection LLC is equipped with a total of six cameras providing complete dimensional inspection, internal and external visual defect detection, and top and bottom surface inspection for a full range of turned aerospace collars.
