Makino features its a61nx-5E machine at IMTS 2014
Makino Inc. featured its a61nx-5E horizontal machining center at IMTS 2014. Designed with an innovative pallet-change system, the a61nx-5E provides enhanced rigidity through a three-point bed casting and tiered column structure. It has X-, Y- and Z-axis travels of 730 mm (28.7 inches), 730 mm and 680 mm (26.8 inches), respectively. Linear acceleration is 1G on the X- and Y-axes, and 0.8 in the Z-axis. The twin-direct-drive rotary tables are said to offer improved access to all sides of a part, especially when using shorter tools.

Dressing versus grinding speed
A machinist wrote to Dr. Jeffrey Badger, author of the "Ask the Grinding Doc" column in Cutting Tool Engineering magazine, because the "old-timers" in the shop tell him he has to dress at the same wheel speed he uses to grind. The machinist wanted to know if that was true, and, if so, why?

Reducing cycle time
A shop surface grinding 12" x 36" plates has to remove 1/8" of material on both sides, but the cycle time is a killer. To find a way to reduce the cycle time, the shop turned to Dr. Jeffrey Badger, author of the "Ask the Grinding Doc" column in Cutting Tool Engineering magazine and the host of our Grinding Doc Video Series.
