Understanding the Identification System for Indexable Inserts

American National Standard ANSI B212.4-2002 covers the identification system for indexable-type inserts for both single-point and multiple-point cutting tools. This standard classifies inserts based on shape, clearance, tolerance, type, size, thickness, cutting-point configuration, edge preparation, hand, and facet size.

PFERD Steel Cut Burs

New Steel Cut Burs from PFERD Inc., Milwaukee, Wis., reportedly provide up to 50 percent higher stock removal rates for applications on steel and cast steel compared to conventional burs with double cut, according to the company. The company's high-performance line of burs are said to deliver a smooth, but aggressive operating action, generating large chips and very high removal rates. Along with increased productivity, users experience better handling, reduced vibrations and less noise.

BENZ offering discount to move inventory before move, expansion

BENZ Inc., Charlotte, N.C., today announced it will be holding a Heavy Metal Sale to commemorate the company’s upcoming expansion and relocation from Charlotte to Hickory, N.C. TuffCut XT

High performance cutting tool manufacturer M.A. Ford Mfg. Co. Inc., Davenport, Iowa, recently expanded its TuffCut® XT high performance Series 278 endmill product offering. More than 400 product line items have been added to include additional lengths of cut, corner radii and Weldon flat options. The corner radius offering is said to meet the needs of the aerospace manufacturing industry.

XPV series carbide endmills

Supermill LLC’s XPV series carbide endmills are for roughing and finishing titanium alloys. The XPVS series tools are for roughing and finishing steel and stainless steel alloys. The 4-ﬂute endmills feature a full eccentric relief, sharp or radius corners, an AlCrN coating and variable helix, variable pitch and progressive rake angles. Standard diameters are from 1⁄8" to 1" (3.175mm to 25.4mm).

Arbor designed for grinder producing shaped bone fragments

Briney Tooling Systems, Bad Axe, Mich., recently worked closely with a leading medical manufacturer to develop a special HSK50E balanceable grinding wheel arbor for a precision CNC grinding machine producing shaped bone fragments for surgical grafting, according to a company news release issued Jan. 19.

Gleason buys Brazilian gear cutting tool company

The Gleason Corp. early this month announced the acquistion of the gear cutting tools business from Hurth Infer Indústria de Máquinas e Ferramentas Ltda., located in Sorocaba, Brazil. Now known as Gleason Indústria de Ferramentas Ltda., the gear cutting tools business includes shaving cutters, shaper cutters, chamfering and deburring tools, as well as tool sharpening services for such products.

SGS licensing HAIMER Safe-Lock System

Cutting tool maker SGS Tool Co., Munroe Falls, Ohio, recently signed a licensing agreement with Haimer GmbH, Igenhausen, Germany, for the tool holding company's HAIMER Safe-Lock System, according to a recent news release. SGS Tool, a market leader for solid carbide end mills in North America, has begun offering their high quality cutting tools with the HAIMER Safe-Lock System. The unique Safe-Lock design in cutting tools and tool holders combines high-precision, shrink-fit clamping with a positive form locking mechanism.
