Toolmaker rises from the ashes

Virtually every established manufacturer has experienced at least one major setback during its history. For Taurus Tool & Engineering, it was losing its main tool grinding area and CNC machines to a fire in June 2014, after a 37-year run at its previous facility in Schaumburg, Ill. No injuries were reported, thankfully, and the cause of the fire is unknown.

New Seco Tools headquarters

When Seco Tools Inc. moved into its new headquarters in Troy, Mich., in July 2008, the toolmaker not only changed buildings, it also changed its corporate culture. Eighteen months after the facility opened, the company is still finding new uses for the modern, light-filled, 81,000-sq.-ft. building, according to Bob Goulding, manager of component engineered tooling and custom tooling.

Focus: Kennametal

Cutting Tool Engineering Editor Alan Richter sat down with Carlos Cardoso, the chairman, president and CEO of Kennametal Inc., at the recent IMTS 2008 show in Chicago.

The 7-minute report addresses Kennametal's goals for diversification and expansion globally, and how that has impacted the company's worldwide sales. Cardoso also notes tht Kennametal will continue co-development tools with others because that's what's best for customers.
