VLC 100 G vertical grinding center

January 13, 2013

EMAG LLC's VLC 100 G vertical grinding center is for chucked components up to 100mm in diameter. The machine can use its onboard pickup system to load itself, and while one part is being machined, the operator or automation system is putting workpieces on the conveyor belt. This reduces idle time and increases output, according to the company. The vertical design ensures grinding sludge falls to the bottom of the machine unhindered, where it is removed from the machine.

Measuring processes can be integrated into the machine. The measuring probe is located between the machining area and pickup station, where it is protected from contamination.

The machine can use two grinding spindles, which perform different operations or handle both roughing at a high feed rate and finishing. This allows the machine to impart a fine finish and produce complex geometries. "For the removal of large amounts of stock, two wheels offer a shorter cycle time than one, with the first wheel designed to do the rough grinding and the second one to do the finish grinding work," explained Dr. Guido Hegener, managing director of EMAG Salach Maschinenfabrik GmbH in Germany.

He added that programming with the company's Navigator software is simple and intuitive, reducing setup time. "For many production environments," Hegener said, "this is an advantage that should not be underrated."

    grinding

Machining operation in which material is removed from the workpiece by a powered abrasive wheel, stone, belt, paste, sheet, compound, slurry, etc. Takes various forms: surface grinding (creates flat and/or squared surfaces); cylindrical grinding (for external cylindrical and tapered shapes, fillets, undercuts, etc.); centerless grinding; chamfering; thread and form grinding; tool and cutter grinding; offhand grinding; lapping and polishing (grinding with extremely fine grits to create ultrasmooth surfaces); honing; and disc grinding.
