Haas Automation covers MQL advantages

The Haas Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) system delivers a steady flow of compressed air and a small quantity of cutting oil directly to the cutting tool or tap, which reduces heat, removes chips and provides lubrication, according to the Haas Automation Inc. website, which features a video report looking at the key features and benefits of MQL.

Working in conjunction with the Automatic Air Gun option, the Haas MQL system atomizes a precisely metered quantity of lubricant into the airstream, delivering it to the tool's cutting edges. The MQL system, which is offered as an addition to the air gun, reportedly will save time and money, as well as cut back on the need for coolant.

In the video, two Haas Automation representatives discuss and demonstrate how the system works. For more about the Haas MQL system, visit the company's website here.

Related Glossary Terms

  • coolant

    coolant

Fluid that reduces temperature buildup at the tool/workpiece interface during machining. Normally takes the form of a liquid such as soluble or chemical mixtures (semisynthetic, synthetic) but can be pressurized air or other gas. Because of water’s ability to absorb great quantities of heat, it is widely used as a coolant and vehicle for various cutting compounds, with the water-to-compound ratio varying with the machining task. See cutting fluid; semisynthetic cutting fluid; soluble-oil cutting fluid; synthetic cutting fluid.

  • tap

    tap

Cylindrical tool that cuts internal threads and has flutes to remove chips and carry tapping fluid to the point of cut. Normally used on a drill press or tapping machine but also may be operated manually. See tapping.
