From Presetting to Tool Management
This article explains how state-of-the-art tool presetting-and-measuring machines can reduce a shop's tool setup time while increasing precision. The article also describes how the additional functions of these high-end units can turn them into sophisticated tool-management systems.
The evolving technology of tool presetting
A close look at the evolving technology of tool presetting.
Save time by setting tools offline with a presetter
The benefits of presetting are somewhat intangible; it takes a little digging to actually understand how much time is spent manually setting tools and what impact that has on shop throughput and profitability.
Presetting plus
Productive machining is all about keeping spindles turning and making chips. Time spent touching off tools, adjusting tool length and offsets in the spindle and doing test cuts is time—and money—wasted. That's the value proposition presented by manufacturers of tool presetters, and it's one that, surprisingly, is a bit of a hard sell in some shops.
A shot in the arm
Business may not be back to pre-pandemic levels across the board, but the U.S. Cutting Tool Institute's spring meeting and the latest economic indicators are a welcome shot in the arm for the industry.

Preset in stone
When tool pre setters are integrated into a shop, a key question is who will take the measurements.
Toolholding system for large-diameter tools
The powRgrip (PG) 48 toolholding system from Rego-Fix USA is suited for large-diameter tools and aggressive machining. For cutters up to 40mm (1.500") in diameter, the company says the PG 48 holder ensures concentricity and total indicated runout (TIR) with deviations of less than 3 µm (0.0001") for tool lengths up to 3 x diameter and length pre-adjustment with a repeat accuracy of less than 10 µm (0.0004").
EXOCARB WXL-CR-EDS 3870 endmills
OSG USA Inc., St. Charles, Illinois, announces the Expansion of the EXOCARB WXL-CR-EDS endmill series to now include inch size offerings. The new EXOCARB WXL-CR-EDS 3870 premium high-performance carbide endmills are designed for pre-hardened and hardened steels.
MMC Mini-Mini Collet Chuck
The MMC collet chuck is precision ground and pre-balanced to 30,000 RPM at G2.5 with runout accuracy of 3 microns at 4 times the diameter – ensuring accuracy and reliability during high-speed operations.
Downflo® Evolution Pre-assembled Small Dust Collector
Versatile collector meets multiple industry demands and delivers unrivaled performance for its size. Developed by Donaldson to meet customer demand for an even more compact, convenient, and reliable filtration system for multiple manufacturing applications.

The DCN drills feature cylindrical shanks, which enable clamping of the drill in hydraulic toolholders (most recommended) or in spring collets. All drill bodies feature helical coolant holes. Prior to using the 12xD drill, it is recommended to drill a pre-hole by using a DCN 1.5xD drill or a centering drill.
