The CPL230 is new precision capacitive displacement sensor system from Lion Precision featuring up to six sensors in a small space. Its performance approaches that of top-of-the-line systems but costs 25 percent less and is ideal for embedded OEM applications.
Engineers and designers who develop equipment requiring precise noncontact position sensing have struggled with getting the performance they need into the small space and budget they have available. Multi-channel precision capacitive displacement sensor systems are often large modular designs offering user adjustments and indicators. These systems have many uses, but for OEM applications, the electronics may be buried in a cabinet where users cannot see the displays or make adjustments. And OEM applications require cost control.
Lion Precision's new CPL230 changes all of that. The new sensor system can support up to six channels of capacitive sensing with performance approaching that of their top-of-the-line Elite Series modular systems. Resolutions as high as 0.0007 percent at 100 Hz or 0.004 percent at 15 kHz. It does all this in 4x2x8 inch package (100x50x200mm). A differential output is provided for maximum performance when output connections must traverse longer distances through machines.
The CPL230 has color-coded channels and probes for easy installation into machines. With no user adjustments or displays, the electronics can be installed in out-of-the-way places. Systems typically ship with 15 kHz bandwidth. Users can access an internal dip-switch to set the bandwidth to 15 kHz, 10 kHz, 1 kHz, 100 Hz. The bandwidth selection allows users to opt for higher resolutions or higher speeds.
The system is easier on designer's budgets at approximately 25 percent lower cost than the Elite Series systems.
The CPL230 replaces Lion Precision's Compact Driver. The Compact Driver was also designed for embedded use and lower cost but could not provide the higher measurement performance required by some designs.
