Using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Kurt designed and optimized the new XL6 XtraLong vise to be better performing than its predecessor vise the 640XL. Boasting a 14.50” opening, the XL6 manual vise clamping capacity is .50” more than the 640XL vise and accomplishes the increase even while the over length was reduced by .42” to 24.10”.
“Finite Element Analysis allows Kurt engineers to see all components of the workholding device and perform simulations and testing under rigorous conditions. Then Kurt engineers can review the analytics to make design adjustments to achieve optimum performance,” stated Steve Kane, sales and marketing manager. “We’re even able to see the optimum placement for the stationary jaw hold-down bolts, and in this case, improve jaw deflection from .0012” to .0008” under the heaviest loads. This is all done prior to ever making the first vise body casting, shortens our time-to-market while eliminating trial and error.”
Another important feature of XL6 XtraLong vise is the brush seal meant to keep debris and coolant from the screw and nut assembly. The XL6 vise uses the same patented brush seal feature as our DX6 vise. This patented design makes the task of removing a damaged seal and installing a replacement much easier and quicker than the older design.
The XL6 vise is available in 6 different models for the best fit for the application. The lineup includes manual, air- or hydraulic-actuated models. All three models are available in standard or reverse models where the screw is located on the stationary jaw side of the vise. This reduces reach-over distance for easier part loading and provides convenient part programming in Y-axis positive direction.
Time-proven Anglock design, an exclusive pull-type jaw clamping design feature that reduces stationary jaw deflection and Kurt’s Anglock design which prevents parts from lifting upward under heavy clamping loads. A hardened spherical segment mechanism produces “all directional” alignment of the jaw components so that clamped parts remain stationary for accurate machining even under high-speed machining conditions.
Kurt XL6 vises have durable 80,000-psi ductile iron bodies with machined steel components. Required by machinists who want the most robust workholding, the heavy ductile iron bodies provide extra part holding rigidity and long-term accuracy while absorbing machining vibration.
All sides of these Kurt XL6 vises are ground for versatility and repeatability. They can be used as receivers for other workholding devices. Also, two of these XL6 vises can be mounted back-to-back and used vertically in a tombstone machine setup.
