LinX – The Evolution of the Linear Motor
Looking for a way to reduce grinding cycle times and improve cutting tool quality in order to satisfy customer requirements, Myles most recently invested in an ANCA MX7 Linear CNC tool grinder with linear motors. The LinX Linear Motor consists of a shaft containing magnets and a forcer containing wound copper coils. The symmetric design results in zero attractive forces between the forcer and shaft, greatly reducing the loading requirement on support bearings.

Thread Chaser Insert
Seco developed its new thread chaser insert holder to bring high levels of precision and rigidity to threading operations that involve tough materials including the hard, gummy or high-chrome content ones used in the oil and gas industry. Such achievement is possible via a special carbide-pin locating system combined with a patented pocket seat surface pattern and high-pressure coolant capabilities.

Straddle knurling tool
Conventional "bump" knurling methods are undesirable for smaller diameter parts because the forces deflect the workpiece, according to Genevieve Swiss Industries Inc., Westfield, Mass. To control this problem, the company recommends using a straddle knurl holder to provide support to the workpiece while the knurling operation is performed.

Beyond the educated guess
Planning is critical when operating CNC machines. When I began machining, CNCs were just coming into mainstream use. The first shops I worked in had only conventional (manual) machines. It wasn't until the mid-1980s that I started to notice the incredible versatility of CNC machines. The complex contours and shapes the machines could generate made many jobs much easier. The use of templates to file and sweep in surfaces was rapidly becoming a thing of the past.
