Countersinking Aircraft Materials
This article traces the changes in countersink design and materials that have been made to satisfy the demands of the aerospace industry. The advantages and disadvantages of different types of modern countersinks are discussed.
Chamfers and Countersinks That Halt Burr Formation
Chamfers and countersinks help control burr formation, improve thread starts, and protect hole quality. This guide explains where each operation fits and how tooling choices affect results.
Counter Intuitive: General Industry Coverage
When it comes to composite materials, 'simple countersinking' isn't so simple.
Done with one: General Industry Coverage
Eliminate applying two countersink tools and a tap to complete a machining operation. A combination tool that countersinks and thread mills.
Stop countersinks and rivet shavers
The Severance Micro-Stop Countersink system allows depth of cut to be adjusted (without tools, just a twist of the wrist) in increments of 0.001". The SC-25P, SC-25PR, SC-35P & SC-35PR unit provide a .0005" increment per click of the unit. The tool holders also provide a base to establish perpendicularity of the cutter to the work surface.
COMP V3
Heule Tool introduced the COMP V3 that is specifically engineered to perform multiple drilling and countersinking operations on uneven surfaces with precision, and without marking the workpiece.
Countersinks
A six-fluted countersink will remove more material per revolution than will a four-flute or single-flute tool. While the single-flute countersink is slow cutting, it will work well in a non-rigid machining setup. Four flutes provide more chip clearance than six do. This is a consideration in machining stringy materials such as some plastics and nonferrous alloys.
TC620 Supreme with countersink option
The TC620 Supreme thread milling cutters utilize patent-pending Walter DeVibe technology with an anti-vibration land to effectively suppress vibrations and allow higher cutting parameters, while contributing to other TC620 Supreme advantages like a high level of process reliability and easy handling due to extremely infrequent radius correction.
HiPACS Drilling and Countersinking System
The HiPACS drilling and countersinking system can be utilized on all machines typically used for aerospace applications. In less stable conditions such as robot end effectors, the diamond coated carbide drills offer excellent tool life and hole quality. PCD-tipped drills, on the other hand, excel in stable conditions such as gantry machines.
Gorillabel
The identification label, which is pre-marked by InfoSight, is a transparent Gorilla Glass disk. InfoSight recommends countersinking the label into a shallow machined pocket so the surface of the component remains level. After severe abrasion, wiping the label with a liquid which matches the glass index of refraction restores its clarity.
2+1 Spot-Drill-Countersink x 82°
Link Industries released a "revolutionary" drilling tool, the 2+1 Spot-Drill-Countersink x 82°. This newly patented design strategically combines spot, drill and countersink actions in a single tool made from HSS for high-speed machining aluminum. Like most Link Industries tools made from HSS, this drill performs at carbide-like speed and feeds, with HSS toughness.
Autofacer Automatic Back Boring and Back Spotfacing Tools
The Autofacer from Steiner Technologies Inc. is a tool that allows the machinist to reach through a hole and machine a circular feature on the back side of the part automatically. By circular feature we might mean a spot face, counter bore, countersink, chamfer, spherical radius, or some combination thereof.
