Getting flexible and growing with automation

In connection with my article about flexible manufacturing systems for the February issue, I visited Camcraft Inc., which has a Makino Machining Complex (MMC2) automated pallet-handling system. Four Makino 4-axis a51nx horizontal machining centers are integrated into the system.

When Singer Manufacturing Co. built the best .45-caliber pistol

The .45-caliber pistol, aka the M1911A1, is one of the most iconic handguns ever made. Perhaps the rarest of this common breed are those made by Singer Manufacturing Co. Best known for manufacturing sewing machines, Singer produced a handful of .45s on the eve of World War II. The guns were so good that the U.S. military asked the company to build more complicated equipment instead.

Savannah Co. is no longer a mystery

For a long time, not much was known about Savannah Co. The precision machining firm didn’t even have a sign out front. There is one now. Arne King, who purchased Savannah two years ago, is working to enhance its visibility.

Cranking out power

Eagle Machine Inc., in Abbotsford, B.C., frequently takes on challenging jobs, such as modifying a diving bell for deep-sea submarine rescues or designing and machining a set of solid aluminum wheels for an 800-mph land speed car based on an F-104 jet aircraft. Owner Steve Green said, “People come to us with the craziest things because other people tell them, ‘the only place you can go is Eagle Machine.’ ”
