CB7015-Grade PCBN Tools

September 01, 2015

Transmissions are typically mass produced, so component costs are a vital factor for success. With its CB7015 indexable insert, Sandvik Coromant offers a cost-efficient, time-saving tool for hard-part turning. The tool covers a range of applications and delivers optimal finish quality, while being highly suited for dry machining.

Sandvik Coromant's CB7015 is a PCBN grade for a broad range of applications and delivers optimal finish quality in the production of transmission components. CB7015 is especially suited for turning case-hardened steels (58 to 65 HRC). Thanks to the innovative Safe-Lock clamping system, the PCBN grade with a wear resistant ceramic binder is also ideal for dry machining. It complies with all standard shape and position tolerances.

The PCBN product range from Sandvik Coromant includes inserts with standard corner radii and wiper inserts as well as an Xcel version. The patented wiper geometry offers a range of process optimizations including improved finishes for standard cutting data. It also provides higher finish quality with significantly increased feeds – roughness grades far below 3.2 µm can consistently be achieved. With Xcel geometries and feeds of 0.011 inches, even roughness grades of 1 µm are possible. In addition, the Xcel insert, with up to 8 cutting edges, enables shorter production times and extremely reduced tool costs per component. Dry machining avoids the costs for coolant use, offers reduced capital investment and low-cost chip disposal, all of which help to further reduce machining costs.

Related Glossary Terms

  • coolant

    coolant

Fluid that reduces temperature buildup at the tool/workpiece interface during machining. Normally takes the form of a liquid such as soluble or chemical mixtures (semisynthetic, synthetic) but can be pressurized air or other gas. Because of water’s ability to absorb great quantities of heat, it is widely used as a coolant and vehicle for various cutting compounds, with the water-to-compound ratio varying with the machining task. See cutting fluid; semisynthetic cutting fluid; soluble-oil cutting fluid; synthetic cutting fluid.

  • indexable insert

    indexable insert

Replaceable tool that clamps into a tool body, drill, mill or other cutter body designed to accommodate inserts. Most inserts are made of cemented carbide. Often they are coated with a hard material. Other insert materials are ceramic, cermet, polycrystalline cubic boron nitride and polycrystalline diamond. The insert is used until dull, then indexed, or turned, to expose a fresh cutting edge. When the entire insert is dull, it is usually discarded. Some inserts can be resharpened.

  • polycrystalline cubic boron nitride ( PCBN)

polycrystalline cubic boron nitride ( PCBN)

Cutting tool material consisting of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride with a metallic or ceramic binder. PCBN is available either as a tip brazed to a carbide insert carrier or as a solid insert. Primarily used for cutting hardened ferrous alloys.

  • turning

    turning

Workpiece is held in a chuck, mounted on a face plate or secured between centers and rotated while a cutting tool, normally a single-point tool, is fed into it along its periphery or across its end or face. Takes the form of straight turning (cutting along the periphery of the workpiece); taper turning (creating a taper); step turning (turning different-size diameters on the same work); chamfering (beveling an edge or shoulder); facing (cutting on an end); turning threads (usually external but can be internal); roughing (high-volume metal removal); and finishing (final light cuts). Performed on lathes, turning centers, chucking machines, automatic screw machines and similar machines.

  • wiper

    wiper

Metal-removing edge on the face of a cutter that travels in a plane perpendicular to the axis. It is the edge that sweeps the machined surface. The flat should be as wide as the feed per revolution of the cutter. This allows any given insert to wipe the entire workpiece surface and impart a fine surface finish at a high feed rate.
