MC319/MC320 Advance Line of Solid-Carbide Milling Cutters

Walter has introduced the MC319/MC320 Advance Line of solid-carbide milling cutters that have been specially engineered for roughing. The Advance lineup is one of the three categories to Walter milling tools. The Advance line signifies product that is efficiently balanced between price and performance. The others are Perform Line tools that provide an economical solution with focused importance on price and the Supreme Line indicating the highest level of technology and performance available.

With exceptional versatility and a high metal-removal rate these newly designed milling cutters feature an extremely wear-resistant knurled profile that also makes them highly robust, resulting in long tool life in a variety of universal applications. With the new knurled profile, the MC319/MC320 power requirement (spindle output) during machining is around 30% lower than comparable tools with smooth cutting edges.

The MC319 is offered in a 4-flute design and internal coolant through the tool for full slotting and pocketing applications. Counter to that, the MC320 has center cutting capability and a multiple-flute design (Z=3-8) without internal coolant for higher horsepower operations. Conefit designs are also available in the MC320, which allows economic replacement of just the cutting edge and reuse of the shank.

Related Glossary Terms

  • coolant

    coolant

Fluid that reduces temperature buildup at the tool/workpiece interface during machining. Normally takes the form of a liquid such as soluble or chemical mixtures (semisynthetic, synthetic) but can be pressurized air or other gas. Because of water’s ability to absorb great quantities of heat, it is widely used as a coolant and vehicle for various cutting compounds, with the water-to-compound ratio varying with the machining task. See cutting fluid; semisynthetic cutting fluid; soluble-oil cutting fluid; synthetic cutting fluid.

  • gang cutting ( milling)

    gang cutting ( milling)

Machining with several cutters mounted on a single arbor, generally for simultaneous cutting.

  • metal-removal rate

    metal-removal rate

Rate at which metal is removed from an unfinished part, measured in cubic inches or cubic centimeters per minute.

  • milling

    milling

Machining operation in which metal or other material is removed by applying power to a rotating cutter. In vertical milling, the cutting tool is mounted vertically on the spindle. In horizontal milling, the cutting tool is mounted horizontally, either directly on the spindle or on an arbor. Horizontal milling is further broken down into conventional milling, where the cutter rotates opposite the direction of feed, or “up” into the workpiece; and climb milling, where the cutter rotates in the direction of feed, or “down” into the workpiece. Milling operations include plane or surface milling, endmilling, facemilling, angle milling, form milling and profiling.

  • shank

    shank

Main body of a tool; the portion of a drill or similar end-held tool that fits into a collet, chuck or similar mounting device.

  • slotting

    slotting

Machining, normally milling, that creates slots, grooves and similar recesses in workpieces, including T-slots and dovetails.
