SMCP Series Endmills

November 01, 2014

LMT Onsrud LP introduces a new series to its high-performance endmill offering; endmills for steel and cast iron.

The combination of both the variable-helix and the variable-index geometry prevents harmonics, reducing chatter, therefore leaving a superior finish on the work piece, according to the company. The open flute form increases chip flow, which results in higher feed rates.

The tapered web increases the endmill's toughness and the variable helix reduces the cutting forces, therefore an increase the depth of cut that can be achieved. Chip control, higher feed rates and increased depth of cut ensure a higher material-removal rate. A combination of the substrate, the advanced cutting edge conditioning and the innovative PVD high-performance coating, results in increased tool life.

Related Glossary Terms

  • chatter

    chatter

Condition of vibration involving the machine, workpiece and cutting tool. Once this condition arises, it is often self-sustaining until the problem is corrected. Chatter can be identified when lines or grooves appear at regular intervals in the workpiece. These lines or grooves are caused by the teeth of the cutter as they vibrate in and out of the workpiece and their spacing depends on the frequency of vibration.

  • depth of cut

    depth of cut

Distance between the bottom of the cut and the uncut surface of the workpiece, measured in a direction at right angles to the machined surface of the workpiece.

  • endmill

    endmill

Milling cutter held by its shank that cuts on its periphery and, if so configured, on its free end. Takes a variety of shapes (single- and double-end, roughing, ballnose and cup-end) and sizes (stub, medium, long and extra-long). Also comes with differing numbers of flutes.

  • feed

    feed

Rate of change of position of the tool as a whole, relative to the workpiece while cutting.

  • physical vapor deposition ( PVD)

    physical vapor deposition ( PVD)

Tool-coating process performed at low temperature (500° C), compared to chemical vapor deposition (1,000° C). Employs electric field to generate necessary heat for depositing coating on a tool’s surface. See CVD, chemical vapor deposition.

  • web

    web

On a rotating tool, the portion of the tool body that joins the lands. Web is thicker at the shank end, relative to the point end, providing maximum torsional strength.

Additional Products from LMT Onsrud LP

LMT Onsrud LP, a leading manufacturer of solid carbide cutting tools, introduces balanced single flute spiral cutting tools to run at RPMs as high as 60,000.

LMT Onsrud LP offers a new solid-carbide ballnose tool. According to the company, the tool's unique geometry, specially designed point and polished primary clearance and flute allow the tool to impart a fine surface finish when machining plastic.
