Spectrum Turning Inserts

March 2012 sees the introduction of a new range of turning inserts from Sandvik Coromant. Spectrum turning is a minimum program that provides a simplified choice of inserts designed to efficiently machine different materials at various cutting conditions.

Excellent for different small batch production, Spectrum turning grades and geometries take away the complication of having several different tools for different jobs.

Whether external or internal machining, rough turning or finishing, machining continuously or with interrupted cuts, these inserts have been designed to be as versatile as possible, delivering high performance output in terms of reliability, tool life and chip control.

The grades can be used for turning in steels, stainless steels, HRSA, cast irons, titanium and nonferrous materials. Two grades are being launched: GC15 combines high strength micro-grain cemented carbide with a thin, PVD coating that adds edge strength and wear resistance. GC30 has high bulk toughness with a gradient cemented carbide substrate and a highly wear- and heat-resistant CVD coating.

    Stainless steels possess high strength, heat resistance, excellent workability and erosion resistance. Four general classes have been developed to cover a range of mechanical and physical properties for particular applications. The four classes are: the austenitic types of the chromium-nickel-manganese 200 series and the chromium-nickel 300 series; the martensitic types of the chromium, hardenable 400 series; the chromium, nonhardenable 400-series ferritic types; and the precipitation-hardening type of chromium-nickel alloys with additional elements that are hardenable by solution treating and aging.

Takes the form of straight turning (cutting along the periphery of the workpiece); taper turning (creating a taper); step turning (turning different-size diameters on the same work); chamfering (beveling an edge or shoulder); facing (cutting on an end); turning threads (usually external but can be internal); roughing (high-volume metal removal); and finishing (final light cuts). Performed on lathes, turning centers, chucking machines, automatic screw machines and similar machines.
