Exopro-S-XPF and Oil-S-XPF Taps

January 12, 2012

OSG Tap & Die Inc. has introduced the EXOPRO-S-XPF and OIL-S-XPF Tap Series, products for customers seeking superior machining stability and long tool life in a wide range of materials.

The S-XPF is a superior thread-forming tap that stably makes threads without creating chips, making it a product that is naturally immune from typical chip problems. Its unique lobe design reduces machining torque by approximately 40 percent when compared to traditional thread-forming taps.

In addition, the S-XPF facilitates previously difficult applications such as 40 HRC steel materials and thread-forming of large diameters, and enables high-speed operation using water-soluble coolant while attaining longer tool life.

Related Glossary Terms

  • coolant

    coolant

Fluid that reduces temperature buildup at the tool/workpiece interface during machining. Normally takes the form of a liquid such as soluble or chemical mixtures (semisynthetic, synthetic) but can be pressurized air or other gas. Because of water’s ability to absorb great quantities of heat, it is widely used as a coolant and vehicle for various cutting compounds, with the water-to-compound ratio varying with the machining task. See cutting fluid; semisynthetic cutting fluid; soluble-oil cutting fluid; synthetic cutting fluid.

  • tap

    tap

Cylindrical tool that cuts internal threads and has flutes to remove chips and carry tapping fluid to the point of cut. Normally used on a drill press or tapping machine but also may be operated manually. See tapping.
