Precihole BTA Deep-Hole Drilling Machines

December 13, 2012

Zagar Inc. has introduced a new range of Precihole BTA Deep Hole Drilling Machines. BTA Drilling, also known as STS (Single Tube System) drilling provides holemaking in the (I.D.) range of 1.00'' to 12.00'' solid drilling, and 16.00'' counter-boring with lengths of up to 40 feet – far greater than a conventional gun drilling process.

The BTA process drills holes into the center of cylindrical parts, achieving high concentricity by rotating the cutting tool and feeding it into a counter-rotating part. The cutting tool is designed with carbide inserts and guide pads mounted to a toolholder drill tube and coolant is introduced at high pressure around the drill tube. This design allows the chips to be evacuated through the center of the drill and provides precise cutting efficiency. The coolant is then cleaned, cooled and recycled for maximum utilization.

Zagar/Precihole will be offering four models with spindle power of 22, 37, 71, and 115 kw. All machines are available with either FANUC or Siemens CNC controls. Also available are more economical BTA machines that hold the part stationary and feed the cutting tool. These are for applications where a high degree of concentricity is not required.

These BTA machines are designed for major parts production in industries such as defense, oil and gas, hydraulics, automotive, general engineering, heavy engineering, power generation, nuclear energy, steel manufacturing and off the road vehicles, to name a few.

Related Glossary Terms

  • computer numerical control ( CNC)

    computer numerical control ( CNC)

Microprocessor-based controller dedicated to a machine tool that permits the creation or modification of parts. Programmed numerical control activates the machine’s servos and spindle drives and controls the various machining operations. See DNC, direct numerical control; NC, numerical control.

  • coolant

    coolant

Fluid that reduces temperature buildup at the tool/workpiece interface during machining. Normally takes the form of a liquid such as soluble or chemical mixtures (semisynthetic, synthetic) but can be pressurized air or other gas. Because of water’s ability to absorb great quantities of heat, it is widely used as a coolant and vehicle for various cutting compounds, with the water-to-compound ratio varying with the machining task. See cutting fluid; semisynthetic cutting fluid; soluble-oil cutting fluid; synthetic cutting fluid.

  • feed

    feed

Rate of change of position of the tool as a whole, relative to the workpiece while cutting.

  • toolholder

    toolholder

Secures a cutting tool during a machining operation. Basic types include block, cartridge, chuck, collet, fixed, modular, quick-change and rotating.
