MB-4000H Horizontal Machining Center
Okuma says its MB-4000H is a high-speed, thermally stable horizontal machining center that offers quick acceleration, fast tool changes and high power to maximize moldmaking productivity within a minimal footprint. This machine can be equipped with space-saving, large-capacity, automatic toolchangers and flexible manufacturing systems to increase shop floor production.
LP 100 Gantry Robot System
The new LP 100 gantry robot system introduced recently by Liebherr-Verzahntechnik GmbH is ideal for handling small and light components, allowing users the option of configuring the gantry to deliver high-speed or high-load performance. This choice allows the LP 100 to be employed flexibly, which fits well with inline production concepts where workpieces travel longer distances across several production machines.
TetraMini-Cut Threading Inserts
Tungaloy Corp. added threading inserts with sharp cutting edges to its TetraMini-Cut insert series, which allows undercutting and finishing of a flange wall. Complemented by the new PVD grade, SH725, TetraMini-Cut's new threading insert features sharp cutting edges, making it suitable for cutting fine pitch threads at a high cutting speed.
TungTurn-Jet Turning Tool System
Tungaloy Corp. has expanded the TungTurn-Jet line, the turning tool system with high-pressure coolant capability. Until now, coolant was simply applied by flooding the cutting area, which can cause chips generated during machining to interfere with the coolant flow, preventing it from reaching the exact spot where needed.
DeepTriDrill Indexable-Insert Gundrills
Tungaloy Corp. further expands its indexable-insert gundrill line, DeepTriDrill, with options down to a diameter range of 14-15.9 mm. Deep-hole drilling is a challenging operation and often creates a bottleneck in holemaking shops around the globe.
Low-cost 3D printer for shop operations
A new breed of 3D printers has begun producing parts made of engineering-grade plastics and fully dense metals suitable for long-term use in a variety of applications. These include jet engine components, engine mounts, medical implants and a host of other products that were once machined or fabricated by conventional means.
Hamilton sings praises of manufacturing
Government concerning itself with manufacturing? What would the Founding Fathers think? We know the answer: December marked 220 years since Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton submitted his "Report on the Subject Manufactures" to the House of Representatives.
Robotics road map calls for increased investment
More than 150 U.S.-based robotics researchers contributed to the 2016 edition of the report titled "A Roadmap for US Robotics From Internet to Robotics." Released Oct. 31, the document calls for improving policy frameworks to safely integrate new technologies, such as self-driving cars and commercial drones, into everyday life.
Telescope to look for earliest light
Although the James Webb Space Telescope isn't scheduled to be launched on an Ariane 5 rocket from French Guiana until October 2018, NASA announced that the 18th and final primary mirror segment was recently installed on what will be the biggest and most powerful space telescope.
RFID tagging for toolholders
The tagging applications for radio frequency identification (RFID) are vast, including pets, property—and even people. Recently, Micro-Mechanics Inc., a Morgan Hill, Calif., machine shop, worked with process control equipment provider Caron Engineering Inc., Wells, Maine, to implement an RFID tagging system on its Okuma LB series CNC lathe.
HUNCH launches student manufacturing—literally
High school manufacturing programs teach students to create production parts, preparing them for careers in industry. Those parts are primarily for terrestrial applications. However, unique and exciting opportunities to produce parts for use above the earth are available to partner-schools in a 14-year-old government program called HUNCH (High schools United with NASA to Create Hardware).
A custom grind: Drilling Performance
Sam Yu, president and owner of Corona, Calif.-based Machine Control Technologies Inc., said he builds specialty tool and cutter grinders in months—and at a fraction the price of competitors' custom grinders.
