Major enhancements to the 2018 R1 release of Surfcam, from Vero Software, include time-saving updates to roughing cycles for milling, turning and mill-turn machining, as well as the prevention of unnecessary CAM regeneration.

Whether it is drilling, milling or turning, residues from the machining are not only left on the part surface but also in the tools and fixtures. Cleaning of the latter is usually still done manually, even though cleaning of the manufactured parts is carried out in a cleaning machine. Specifically, for toolholders (e.g. HSK) and tool fixtures, Metallform has developed inserts, which can be easily placed in standard cleaning baskets.

Seco offers the MP2050 insert grade with an optimized balance of toughness and wear resistance to efficiently machine high-strength, heat-resistant materials. Originally developed specifically for turbine blade machining in the power generation industry segment, the new grade also excels in aerospace applications and offers exceptional performance in milling materials such as austenitic and martensitic stainless steels, as well as titanium.

The CrazyMill Cool products have been developed by the Swiss tool manufacturer Mikron Tool for milling in small dimensions with high performance and quality. Now a new “family member” has been added. It is a four-teeth finishing milling cutter with shank integrated cooling, available in the diameter range of 1 to 8 mm und for milling depths of up to 5 diameters deep.

Seco Tools has introduced its R217/220.28 cutters with new body designs that incorporate double-sided round inserts to deliver cost-effective performance, as well as boost productivity. Double-negative-positioning pocket seats of the R217/R220.28 cutters deliver enhanced cutting capability and significant gains in productivity, according to the company.

Slater Tools announces its range of indexable punch broaches and holders to machine shapes in workpieces where rotary broaching may not be feasible. Such cases include (greater) depth of operation, tough materials, tooth height, chip evacuation challenges and applications that require orientation.

It started in 2015, when engineers at a major U.S.-based aircraft manufacturer kicked-off a challenge to determine which cutting tool manufacturer offers the best products for milling forged Ti-6Al-4V titanium. The company invited Kennametal and 10 other global tooling suppliers to the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in the U.K., where the different teams competed in the challenge.

Hermle Machine Co. offers a new machine to the North American market. The C 650 is an extension to the Hermle Performance Line series, and the machine builder now provides three machine models for economical 5-axis machining.
