The Garant Master product family for high-performance machining has a new member. With its launch of the GARANT Master Steel DEEP, the Hoffmann Group has taken deep hole drills to the next level. The tool has been designed for deep hole drilling with an extremely high level of process reliability with high cutting parameters. Optimized for machining steel, the deep hole drill shows its strengths without a co-pilot hole even in stainless steel and cast iron. It thereby achieves a tool life up to three times that of the current competitors. The GARANT Master Steel Deep is thus particularly suitable for machining high-quality components, which requires maximum process reliability. The new deep hole drill can be ordered in the eShop at www.hoffman-group.com and via the Hoffmann Group 2020/2021 catalog which launched last month.
Internal tests show the new GARANT Master Steel DEEP achieved impressive results in comparison to its predecessor and products from competitors: up to 30 percent higher metal removal rate, up to 70 percent higher process reliability and three times longer tool life. The tool owes this outstanding performance to a particularly ingenious concept: straight main cutting edges reduce the cutting forces, improved point geometry ensures optimum chip breaking, and a special design for cooling and drill guidance offers unique advantages – the through-cooling is only helical in the head area in order to enable an unequal helical pitch of the chip flutes on the remaining drill body with an adaptive helix angle from 15 to 30 degrees. This leads to extremely accelerated evacuation of the chips out of the hole and to greater process reliability at higher cutting speeds. Patented drill guidance consisting of a guide land and guide rings reduces vibration and allows top drill hole quality. Thanks to the guide rings, coolant flows round the drill tip in a targeted manner and prevents overheating of the machining zone. In addition, the chip flow is optimized by a head coating and polished chip flutes.
The GARANT Master Steel DEEP also sets new standards for tool life and tool wear. Its extraordinary level of stability and durability is due to a strong core made from sintered carbide substrate (patented process) as well as an extremely wear-resistant and heat-resistant TiAlN-based multi-layercoating. Due to the head coating, the tool can be reground up to four times to the original quality.
Related Glossary Terms
- coolant
coolant
Fluid that reduces temperature buildup at the tool/workpiece interface during machining. Normally takes the form of a liquid such as soluble or chemical mixtures (semisynthetic, synthetic) but can be pressurized air or other gas. Because of water’s ability to absorb great quantities of heat, it is widely used as a coolant and vehicle for various cutting compounds, with the water-to-compound ratio varying with the machining task. See cutting fluid; semisynthetic cutting fluid; soluble-oil cutting fluid; synthetic cutting fluid.
- flutes
flutes
Grooves and spaces in the body of a tool that permit chip removal from, and cutting-fluid application to, the point of cut.
- helix angle
helix angle
Angle that the tool’s leading edge makes with the plane of its centerline.
- land
land
Part of the tool body that remains after the flutes are cut.
- pitch
pitch
1. On a saw blade, the number of teeth per inch. 2. In threading, the number of threads per inch.
