DC Swiss Circular Thread Milling Cutter

March 17, 2016

Drilling and threading with the same tool? Even in working depth up to 3 diameters? Yes it is possible, thanks to the new DC Swiss circular thread milling cutter from Mikron Tools with internal coolant starting from 3mm (0.12”).

The innovative improvements compensate the known disadvantages of circular milling. The internal coolant has a double function: Evacuating the large volume of chips and cooling down the cutting edge constantly. The carbide has been chosen to adapt to the tough conditions when drilling and the polyvalent PVD coating is minimizing the tools wear.

Related Glossary Terms

  • coolant

    coolant

Fluid that reduces temperature buildup at the tool/workpiece interface during machining. Normally takes the form of a liquid such as soluble or chemical mixtures (semisynthetic, synthetic) but can be pressurized air or other gas. Because of water’s ability to absorb great quantities of heat, it is widely used as a coolant and vehicle for various cutting compounds, with the water-to-compound ratio varying with the machining task. See cutting fluid; semisynthetic cutting fluid; soluble-oil cutting fluid; synthetic cutting fluid.

  • gang cutting ( milling)

    gang cutting ( milling)

Machining with several cutters mounted on a single arbor, generally for simultaneous cutting.

  • milling

    milling

Machining operation in which metal or other material is removed by applying power to a rotating cutter. In vertical milling, the cutting tool is mounted vertically on the spindle. In horizontal milling, the cutting tool is mounted horizontally, either directly on the spindle or on an arbor. Horizontal milling is further broken down into conventional milling, where the cutter rotates opposite the direction of feed, or “up” into the workpiece; and climb milling, where the cutter rotates in the direction of feed, or “down” into the workpiece. Milling operations include plane or surface milling, endmilling, facemilling, angle milling, form milling and profiling.

  • milling cutter

    milling cutter

Loosely, any milling tool. Horizontal cutters take the form of plain milling cutters, plain spiral-tooth cutters, helical cutters, side-milling cutters, staggered-tooth side-milling cutters, facemilling cutters, angular cutters, double-angle cutters, convex and concave form-milling cutters, straddle-sprocket cutters, spur-gear cutters, corner-rounding cutters and slitting saws. Vertical cutters use shank-mounted cutting tools, including endmills, T-slot cutters, Woodruff keyseat cutters and dovetail cutters; these may also be used on horizontal mills. See milling.

  • physical vapor deposition ( PVD)

    physical vapor deposition ( PVD)

Tool-coating process performed at low temperature (500° C), compared to chemical vapor deposition (1,000° C). Employs electric field to generate necessary heat for depositing coating on a tool’s surface. See CVD, chemical vapor deposition.

  • threading

    threading

Process of both external (e.g., thread milling) and internal (e.g., tapping, thread milling) cutting, turning and rolling of threads into particular material. Standardized specifications are available to determine the desired results of the threading process. Numerous thread-series designations are written for specific applications. Threading often is performed on a lathe. Specifications such as thread height are critical in determining the strength of the threads. The material used is taken into consideration in determining the expected results of any particular application for that threaded piece. In external threading, a calculated depth is required as well as a particular angle to the cut. To perform internal threading, the exact diameter to bore the hole is critical before threading. The threads are distinguished from one another by the amount of tolerance and/or allowance that is specified. See turning.

Additional Products from Mikron Tool

One year ago, Mikron Tool introduced flexible solid carbide drills and earned respect from the producers of deep hole drills, because these drills, starting at 0.1mm diameter, achieved drilling depths up to 30 x D. Today, the Swiss tool producer takes another step forward and expands their drilling…

The three main factors which appeal to users of the new MIKRON Multistar NX-24 Rotary Machining System from an economical perspective are outstanding productivity, full flexibility and highest precision.

Mikron Corp. Monroe offers the CrazyDrill drill with cutting depths of 15, 20 and 30 diameters starting from a 1mm diameter and 40 diameters starting from a 2mm diameter.

Mikron Corp. Monroe engineers special tools, which are often combination tools for several different machining operations.

A milling cutter from Mikron Corp. Monroe is for back chamfer milling of small contours and bores, starting from 0.4mm in diameter. The company recommends conventional milling in two steps to avoid secondary burrs.
