MFPN facemill

September 01, 2010

Kyocera Industrial Ceramics Corp., Cutting Tool Div.'s MFPN facemill accepts PNMU inserts, which have a double-sided, pentagonal design that provides 10 cutting edges per insert. The combination of the tough, dual-angle edge and the 10° positive axial rake angle allows the facemill to run at a high feed rate, according to the company.

    axial rake

On angular tool flutes, the angle between the tooth face and the axial plane through the tool point.

  • ceramics

    ceramics

Cutting tool materials based on aluminum oxide and silicon nitride. Ceramic tools can withstand higher cutting speeds than cemented carbide tools when machining hardened steels, cast irons and high-temperature alloys.

  • facemill

    facemill

Milling cutter for cutting flat surfaces.

  • feed

    feed

Rate of change of position of the tool as a whole, relative to the workpiece while cutting.

  • rake

    rake

Angle of inclination between the face of the cutting tool and the workpiece. If the face of the tool lies in a plane through the axis of the workpiece, the tool is said to have a neutral, or zero, rake. If the inclination of the tool face makes the cutting edge more acute than when the rake angle is zero, the rake is positive. If the inclination of the tool face makes the cutting edge less acute or more blunt than when the rake angle is zero, the rake is negative.
