Hyper Spindles
NT Tool's Hyper Spindles use a 1:5 ratio internal gear system to multiply the RPM of existing machines up to 5 times at the cutting edge, with a maximum of 30,000 min-1, according to a recent announcement from the Franklin, Tenn., company.
DT-2 and DM-2 machining centers
Haas Automation recently expanded its drill, tap and mill product line with a pair of high-speed, lean-style machining centers—the DT-2 and DM-2—that reportedly provide the same high acceleration rates, fast axis speeds and short tool change times as their smaller brethren. Yet, the new machines offer an additional 8" (203mm) of X-axis travel and table length, with only a slight increase in footprint.
MU-4000V vertical machining center
Okuma America, Charlotte, N.C., recently introduced the MU-4000V, a 5-axis vertical machining center said to be ideal for 5-axis multi-sided machining within the aerospace and die/mold industries. The MU-4000V reportedly offers high-speed, process intensive machining combined with turning and 5-axis multitasking machining.
VS 101 Camera System
Schaumburg-based Heidenhain recently introduced the VS 101 camera system as a new feature of its flagship TNC 640 mill-turn machine in order to automatically monitor the setup situation and machining result, according to a a company news release.
Diamond Burnishing Tools
Diamond burnishing is ideal for a variety of parts and ductile metals under 40 HRC, including steel, stainless steel, aluminum and cast iron. A cast iron shaft which started at a preburnished 67 Ra microinch surface finish yielded a 10 Ra microinch finish with a 0.0005" material compression in a single pass at 750 sfm.
Analysis: Manufacturers beginning to operate like software companies
An online San Francisco Chronicle report posted Feb. 18—"Hacker ethos comes to the factory floor"—suggests that large and small manufacturers alike "are beginning to think and operate like software companies." And, just for the record, that's a good thing, say the authors: Mark Muro, a senior fellow and the policy director of the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institution, and Kelly Kline, the economic development director and chief innovation officer of the city of Fremont, Calif.
Photo etching metals with spring characteristics
Tech-Etch, Plymouth, Mass., which specializes in the etching, forming, heat treating and finishing of components made from metals with superior spring characteristics, offers prototypes delivered in 5 days.
Brush-on Metal Blackeners
Birchwood Technologies three brush-on metal blackeners—Presto Black BST4, Antique Black M24, and Aluma Black A14—are now available in smaller, quart sized (32 oz.) bottles for easier application and handling, at a new lower price point.
CNC Expanding Mandrels
According to Royal Products, ID gripping is often overlooked as a workholding option, yet in many situations it is the best choice. For example, it allows for access to the entire length of the workpiece so all external surfaces can be turned in a single operation, ensuring perfect concentricity.
Cranfield Precision TTG Machine
Fives says the new Cranfield Precision TTG machine is a radically new concept. While conventional machine tool platforms use stacked linear axes as the primary motion control system, the Cranfield Precision range coordinates two rotary axes and a short linear axis in a "twin-turret" design.
SideWinder Vertical Vise
The Kurt SideWinder vise provides vertical workholding without interfering with an existing host vise or the spindle. SideWinder vise expands the capabilities of 6 or 8 inch vises by adding vertical clamping above and behind the host vise and provides easy spindle access for secondary or final machining operations.
Precision Solid Carbide and PCD Cutting Tools
GenSwiss, Westfield, Mass., recently partnered with Louis Belet SA to become the exclusive North American representative for Louis Belet precision carbide cutting tools and PCD-tipped milling tools, according to a Feb. 17 news release from Genevieve Swiss Industries Inc.
