Heidenhain ECA 4000 ring encoder
New design features of the ECA 4000 absolute ring encoder make it suitable for use in angular motion feedback, according to a Feb. 16 announcement released by Heidenhain Corp., Schaumburg, Ill. The next generation encoder builds on the success of its predecessor, the ERA 4000 incremental ring encoder that has been used for more than a decade in applications involving machine tool rotary tables, semiconductor wafer motion stages and robotics.
Collaboration connects HIP to vacuum heat treatment
Solar Atmospheres, Hermitage, Penn., recently announced a collaboration with Pressure Technology Inc. (PTI) that will offer an added-value service to PTI's HIP (Hot Isostatic Press) Facility in Concord, Ohio, according to a Feb. 15 news release. The collaboration is the result of an escalation of components being printed via additive manufacturing as well as the increased production of engine blade manufacturing to support newer more efficient aircraft, according to Solar Atmospheres. Such market forces means that hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) is in more demand for the densification of many materials.

Single Source Technologies (SST), a North American distributor of machinery brands based in Auburn Hills, Mich., recently announced the acquistion of Automation Solutions Inc. (ASI), effective as of Jan. 18, according to a Feb. 9 SST news release.
Tech institute partners with industry to make generic tool data public
NTB Interstate University of Technology Buchs, an institute that specializes in engineering informatics, recently announced a new website, gtc-tools.com, which provides information to the public on the Generic Tool Catalog (GTC) cutting tool data exchange format, according to a joint news release issued Feb. 9. The GTC data exchange format was developed through collaboration among machining hardware and software leaders Siemens PLM Software, Sandvik Coromant, Iscar and Kennametal.

Mahr Federal Inc., Providence, R.I., recently introduced the next generation of waterproof digital calipers with the new MarCal 16 EWR. Featuring an ergonomic design with lapped guideways and a larger display, the MarCal 16 EWR is said to offer IP 67 protection against dust, coolants and lubricants, according to a Feb. 12 news release.

The new surface profiler features Sensofar's key 3-in-1 technology approach, namely the integration of confocal, interferometry and focus variation techniques into the same sensor head.
EDGE X-5 waterjet machine
The EDGE X-5 waterjet system from Jet Edge Inc., St. Michael, Minn., is designed and built for heavy duty industrial use in waterjet shops that demand lasting performance, precision and accuracy, the company announced in a Feb. 9 news release. The system reportedly cuts precise 3D parts and bevels up to 50°.

Through the new connection, customers now have access to real-time local availability of cutting tool items from within the MachiningCloud app, according to the news release.

Tungaloy Corp. has introduced the AH8000 series of PVD grades and chipbreakers for turning heat resistant alloys. The new PVD grades feature impressive resistance to both wear and fracture due to the world's first nano-multi-layered AlTiN coating with high Al content and dramatically reduces notch wear, crater wear and built-up edge in machining heat resistant alloys.
