Shredding paper from the shop floor
The digital revolution has impacted everyone. As is typical with a disruptive technology, expected cost savings drive initial adoption. But, over time, far greater impact is achieved once the new technology is better understood. For example, the Internet and e-mail have dramatically reduced the volume of mail carried by the U.S.

Thanks a Bunch: General Industry Coverage
A bandsaw is a common sight in a machine shop. To get blanks on the floor faster, shops use bandsaws to cut several square, rectangular or round solid bars or tubes at a time. Knowing about the proper bandsaw, workholders and saw blades can make the bundle cutting process go much more smoothly.

NanoMech to build new campus
Nanotechnology developer NanoMech announced it will build a facility adjoining its existing factory in Springdale, Ark. The approximately-25,000-sq.-ft.t building will triple the size of current operations and will serve as the company's world headquarters. NanoMech produces tool coatings and other nanotechnology-based products.
Customized technical training
Like many manufacturers across the U.S., Greendale's Kinetic Company faces a shortage of skilled labor. Long-term, highly skilled employees are retiring, leaving the knife-making company with a younger, less experienced workforce. With that challenge in mind and armed with a Workforce Advancement Training (WAT) grant, managers from Kinetic Company teamed with Milwaukee Area Technical College to enhance the skills of their incumbent workers.
Crystal persuasion
A random arrangement is all well and good when it comes to avant-garde music, but the random crystal growth direction found in conventional CVD alumina cutting tool coatings can create weak areas where cracks form, shortening tool life.
Portable CMM
The portable coordinate measuring machine (CMM) arm-free probing system HandyPROBE and the C-Track dual-camera sensor form a unique duo that generates high accuracy measurements and increases the reliability and speed of the measurement process.
