Milling Cutters

Ask CTE Contributors - milling for the automotive market

Cutting Tool Engineering and Sandvik Coromant on Feb. 22 presented this one-hour webinar focused on how shops can add tool life and gain productivity advantages when performing facemilling and unrepeated shoulder milling for the automotive market. The webinar is based on "A Lighter Touch," a feature article published in the February 2023 issue of Cutting Tool Engineering magazine. Sangram Dash, who authored the article and served as the webinar presenter, is the global product application manager for indexable milling at Sandvik Coromant.

Handouts:

MaxiMill 273 Shell Face Milling Cutter

The MaxiMill 273 combines all the advantages of positive and negative inserts in one cutter that boosts stability and cost-effectiveness while reducing vibration for superior surface finishes. With an approach angle of 44.6o and a maximum feed rate of 2 mm/rev., the MaxiMill 273’s high insert thicknesses and strong obtuse corner angles improve stability and contribute to excellent system reliability.

High Feed SP Milling System

Packed with versatility, one High Feed SP tool handles a complete range of high feed milling operations and materials. The tool optimizes such operations as copy milling, ramping, pocketing, face milling and plunging to further reduce tooling inventories. Users optimize milling performance while eliminating the need to switch among numerous tools to implement various machining strategies and part materials.

CoroMill MF80

Based on a technology platform similar to the existing CoroMill® 345, this new milling concept offers a 40 percent lighter cutter body with shim protection and a high number of inserts for secure and stable machining, even in vibration-prone overhang applications. The 89.5-degree approach angle enables the multi-edge cutter to work close to the fixture, which not only greatly improves machine utilization, but also ensures a longer tool life with less scrap.

Helical SN8-13 Milling System

Built for difficult applications involving ISO P, M, K and S materials, the cutters offer application-specific sub- family designs featuring left or right-hand helixes, half- or full-effective teeth options, two front insert and many radii choices for long tool life and maximum chip evacuation. Reliable and user-friendly, the Helical SN8-13 also eliminates incorrect indexing of front and helix inserts, reducing operator error.

TC620 Supreme

The TC620 Supreme thread milling cutters utilize patent-pending Walter DeVibe technology with an anti-vibration land to effectively suppress vibrations and allow higher cutting parameters, while contributing to other TC620 Supreme advantages like a high level of process reliability and easy handling due to extremely infrequent radius correction.
