Designed for large lot-size machining of big aluminum wheels or similar parts, the You Ji YV-600E2T Vertical Turning Center (VTC) is described as a compact, high-precision, heavy-duty machine suitable as a stand-alone machining cell or integrated with other machines to form a complete flexible manufacturing system, according to a Feb.
trowalplast HDC
Walther Trowal GmbH & Co. KG, Haan, Germany, recently introduced "trowalplast HDC," a newly developed, fast-cutting plastic media said to be ideal for grinding and surface smoothing of metal workpieces, especially die-castings, the company announced in a Feb. 11 news release.
S lynx 3D Compact Profiler
Sensofar Metrology, Terrassa, Spain, recently introduced the S lynx, a compact, high-resolution, non-contact 3D surface profiler, according to a company news release issued Feb. 10. The new surface profiler features Sensofar's key 3-in-1 technology approach, namely the integration of confocal, interferometry and focus variation techniques into the same sensor head.
EDGE X-5 waterjet machine
The EDGE X-5 waterjet system from Jet Edge Inc., St. Michael, Minn., is designed and built for heavy duty industrial use in waterjet shops that demand lasting performance, precision and accuracy, the company announced in a Feb. 9 news release. The system reportedly cuts precise 3D parts and bevels up to 50°.
MATRIX MachiningCloud Connection
Commodity & Tool Management Services (CTMS), a business unit of the IMC Group, and MachiningCloud GmbH recently announced the availability of the MATRIX MachiningCloud Connection, according to a Feb. 9 joint news release. Through the new connection, customers now have access to real-time local availability of cutting tool items from within the MachiningCloud app, according to the news release.
AH8000 Series Inserts
Tungaloy Corp. has introduced the AH8000 series of PVD grades and chipbreakers for turning heat resistant alloys. The new PVD grades feature impressive resistance to both wear and fracture due to the world's first nano-multi-layered AlTiN coating with high Al content and dramatically reduces notch wear, crater wear and built-up edge in machining heat resistant alloys.
Briney Precision Test Bars
Briney Tooling Systems, Bad Axe, Mich., recently expanded its test bar offering to include CAT40 and CAT50 models; BT30, BT40 and BT50 models, and HSK50A, HSK63A, HSK80A and HSK100A models, according to a Feb. 9 news release. Briney also offers special test bar designs.

Multiple machine tool builders offer equipment for machining the helicopter transmission components Northstar Aerospace Inc. produces at its Bedford Park, Ill., facility, but not all are equally efficient in handling the task.
Reaming can be most cost-effective way to produce accurate holes
Technological advances in cutting tools, machine tools and toolholders have allowed machinists and manufacturing engineers to increase holemaking efficiency by eliminating the number of tools required to produce accurate holes. High-performance drills are the best example of these technological advances. In the past, it was common for a machinist to spot-drill, drill and then ream to achieve accurate hole geometry.
Component cleanliness requires effort throughout manufacturing process
Specifications for particulate and film-residue cleanliness are a matter of course for many machined components. In addition to the parts cleaning procedure, manufacturers must consider the entire process chain when seeking to efficiently achieve and maintain the required level of cleanliness.
Overcoming five common challenges when turning
While it's nearly impossible to quantify the most common challenges or most important considerations when turning, experts agree that the five aspects of turning discussed below should be considered. It's important to note that each factor has the potential to impact the others.
Horizontal machining centers’ enhanced capabilities shorten payback periods
At roughly twice the price of a vertical machining center, do horizontal machining centers make sound financial sense? Absolutely, according to Scott Baldus, product specialist at Okuma America Corp. The Charlotte, N.C., machine builder offers both VMCs and HMCs, yet, Baldus noted, HMCs provide, on average, more than three times the spindle utilization of VMCs.
