In connection with my canvassing efforts to best focus the boring tools topic scheduled for the January issue of Cutting Tool Engineering, I spoke with Harvey Patterson, product development engineer at Scientific Cutting Tools Inc., Simi Valley, Calif.
Private investors take majority stake in toolmaker Harvey Performance Co.
Summit Partners of Boston and Menlo Park, Calif., has bought a majority investment in the privately held Harvey Performance Company, Rowley, Mass. Harvey makes specialized cutting tools for precision machining applications for the manufacturing and metalworking industries, including aerospace and defense, medical, automotive, industrial motors and telecommunications sectors.
DUO-LOCK Modular Endmill
DUO-LOCK from Kennametal Inc. is a modular endmill with the performance of solid carbide. It uses a proprietary, double-cone locating surface similar to that of Kennametal's KM or KM4X tooling design, assuring "not to exceed" radial runout values of 5 μm (.0002 in.) and Z-axis coupling repeatability of 10 μm (.0004 in.) or better.
Perfomax Indexable Insert Drill
With a new reengineered design, the Seco Perfomax indexable insert drill delivers higher drilling parameters and longer tool life as well as exceptional chip control and evacuation. The drill's innovative features include new flute designs with special anti-friction surfaces and laser hardened fronts for added strength, stability and accuracy.

EXSYS Tool Inc. has introduced a new space-saving 5-axis rotary table TAP for small, high-speed vertical machining centers. The table TAP allows users to upgrade a vertical machining center to significantly increase productivity without incurring the expense of a new machine, according to the company.
DMP 500/2SP Vertical Machining Centers
Doosan Machine Tools announces the addition of the DMP 500/2SP to its line of vertical machining centers. Equipped with two spindles and two automatic-tool-change (ATC) systems, this new model was designed for production job shops and high-volume parts manufacturers.
Survey: Manufacturers are adapting Smart Factory tech—and reaping benefits
A survey designed to assess manufacturers' preparedness for Industry 4.0 changes polled 537 manufacturing executives across eight industry segments. The vast majority of manufacturers surveyed have recognized the need for industrial transformation, with most already taking action. Those that have done so say they are already seeing benefits as a result.
Watlow saluted for workforce development efforts
Thermal systems manufacturer Watlow has been working to bolster a shrinking manufacturing workforce in the US, and its efforts have been recognized. The Missouri Association of Manufacturers has awarded the company a Made in Missouri Leadership Award because of its support of STEM education, training programs and economic development initiatives.

No. 994 Special Cabinet Oven for Heating the End of Long Parts
No. 994 is a 500° F (260° C) special cabinet oven from Grieve, currently used for heating the end of long parts at the customer's facility. Workspace dimensions of this oven are a tapered 10" at front and 20" at rear wide x 20" deep x 21" high.

Sandvik Coromant launches CoroTap line
In response to strong demand for reliable machining solutions in the aerospace industry, Sandvik Coromant has launched new tapping and thread milling tools for ISO S materials (titanium and nickel-based alloys). The products have been specifically designed to enhance process security on high-value components, such as engine casings, thus providing reductions in scrap rates and machine downtime.
