Top finishers: Solutions for 10 of the most challenging deburring applications
Part complexity combined with difficult material properties make deburring a challenge for many part manufacturers.
Bremen Castings celebrates its 75th anniversary, but doesn’t look back
What do baseball legend Ted Williams slugging his first big-league dinger, Batman comics hitting the streets and Germany attacking Poland to launch World War II have in common? They all occurred in 1939, the same year Ellis Brown, Charles W. Kling and Harold Heckamen founded Bremen (Ind.) Gray Iron Foundry Inc.
Testing: The ups and downs of wheel performance when creep-feed grinding
Results from testing aluminum-oxide vitrified-bond wheels and diamond wheels in three different bond systems show the proper diamond roll dresser design, application methods and wheel specification can help manufacturing engineers achieve optimal results from continuous-dress, creep-feed (CDCF) grinding.
Sonic shaper: Ultrasonic machining is a sound but unsung option
You may not have heard, but ultrasonic waves can help machine precise features into hard, brittle materials.
Sharp attack: How needles and other medical sharps are ground
Spend enough time working in a machine shop and you're bound to pay a visit to the emergency room for a cut finger. First comes the sting as the ER physician injects you with a local anesthetic, then the tug of the thread as she drags the suturing needle, a type of surgical needle, through your skin. This traumatic experience is painful enough, but without the sharp edge imparted to those needles through special machines known as needle-point grinders, those sutures would feel as if the doc were using a darning needle from grandma's sewing kit.
Sandvik Coromant recycles for vets
Sandvik Coromant, Fair Lawn, N.J., is dedicating the months of July, August and September to raise money for "Workshops for Warriors." For every pound of carbide received for recycling during those months, Sandvik Coromant will donate $1 to the non-profit organization that is dedicated to training, certifying and placing veterans into manufacturing careers.
Mastercam underwrites Purdue grant
CNC Software, Inc., Tolland, Conn.-based developers of Mastercam CAD/CAM software, is one of the two initial underwriters of Purdue University's MSTEM3 Grant Initiative, aimed at changing young peoples' perception of manufacturing through the eduFACTOR multimedia resource from Edge Factor. CNC Software has underwritten $50,000 to help increase the number of schools that can take advantage of the grant, while The Gene Haas Foundation has contributed $250,000. Because of the grant, upper elementary and high schools can qualify for eduFACTOR's suite of products for as little as $99 per year.
Heritage Cutter debuts
Heritage Cutter is the new "brand family" name for cutting tools manufactured by Data Flute, Pittsfield, Mass., as well as Brubaker Tool and Weldon, both based in Millersburg, Pa. The toolmakers are now united under the new Heritage Cutter family of brands. Brubaker was founded in 1881, Weldon is nearly 100 years old, and Data Flute specializes in high-performance carbide endmills.
